10 Best Tips for Playing Blackjack Online
You might be surprised to hear that blackjack’s popularity has seen a decline in physical casinos over the past few decades.
But this is a relative measure, against the rise of other casino games such as baccarat and roulette. And when you look at the numbers, you’ll see that it’s still far and away one of the most popular games around.
In the digital world, the same holds true. The fast pace of the game means you’re never waiting around to get back in on the action. And playing from the comfort of your own home means you can start and stop whenever you like, to limit your spend.
If you’re trying to get into playing this card game online, here are the 10 tips for playing blackjack you need to hear about first.
1. Blackjack for Beginners: Know the Rules
Blackjack is a straightforward game, but not everyone knows the rules in full before jumping in.
We don’t recommend learning the rules by trial and error while you’re gambling with real money!
Play a few hands with your friends at home, playing for chips, with the rules at hand. Once you’re confident you know all there is to know, you’re ready to try a few hands online.
2. Know the Interface
When playing online, take some time before your first hand to learn all the buttons on the casino’s interface.
You need to know how to make each move, and the layout may switch up between online casinos – make sure you’re clicking on the right button!
After all, you don’t want to accidentally hit on a 20…
3. Budget Your Bets
Spread out your betting.
While you’re getting to grips with the table, just play some small bets and slowly ramp up – if you feel like it, no pressure.
Spacing out the amount you bet each round lets you play for longer in the case that you lose, and allows you more chances to win – even if you win less each time.
4. Think About the Odds
Looking at the cards in your deck allows you to think about the odds of getting the card you really want.
Say you have a pair of 7s in your starting hands. Ideally, you’d get another 7 on your hit to make 21.
However, the chance of this happening is significantly lowered by the fact that two 7s are already missing from the deck – because they’re in your hand.
Thinking carefully about the cards you have before standing or hitting can help you to build a strategy.
5. How Many Decks Are Being Used?
It’s normal to play casual games of blackjack using just one, perhaps two, decks.
Casinos tend to use between six and eight decks. This dramatically affects the odds you face (see our third tip above), so it helps to know what you’re up against.
6. Dealing with ‘Soft 17s’
A soft 17 is where you hold an ace and a six, or an ace and two threes. It’s called a soft 17 because aces can be worth either one or eleven.
Always hit on a soft 17. You can’t go bust from here.
If you get a 4, perfect, you can add up to 21.
If you hit a card that’s worth 10, you’ve now got a ‘hard’ 17. So you end up where you started, so aren’t any worse off. You might then like to take a punt on another hit, or just stand and see what happens.
7. Splitting Tips
Always split 8s and aces. A pair of 8s (a score of 16) isn’t a great hand and you’ll give yourself better odds of a good hit by splitting. Splitting a pair of aces doubles your chances of landing a 10 or face card for the top score of 21.
Don’t split a pair of 10s – you’ve already got 20, which is a high-scoring hand. The dealer has to beat that. The probability of getting an ace on either of your split hands is fairly low.
Likewise, splitting 4s and 5s results into two really weak hands. You might as well take a chance from the initial hand.
Remember to always check the rules of your chosen casino to make sure you know about any restrictions on splitting cards.
8. Drinking and Dealing
You’re best off not starting off your online blackjack round if you’ve had a few beers.
This will make it harder to think straight about the odds, and it increases the chance that you’ll make bets you regret later on.
Leave the beer until after you’re done playing.
9. Online Casinos Shuffle Every Hand
You should be aware that online casinos automatically shuffle the deck(s) after every hand played.
This means that previously played hands don’t just get put aside or on the bottom of the deck. Players of the physical game a bit of knowledge to use, as they know which cards have already been used up, and won’t be cycled back until the dealer shuffles every few rounds.
You can’t use this knowledge against the house in an online casino, so don’t try. You’ll be way off the mark.
10. Don’t Get Carried Away
A classic gambler’s mistake is to believe that a losing streak will eventually turn into a winning streak. There’s even a name for this – gambler’s fallacy.
This isn’t how chance works!
Take it easy, play for fun, and set yourself a firm limit. It should be fun and exciting, not stressful and worrying. The same goes for any online casino game you try out.
